As expected, today was another hot one! Let’s talk snow days! Did you know . . . .even with 0 snow days, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George Counties will still be in school during the 2016 USA Gymnastics Championships? USA Gymnastics announced the 2016 USA Gymnastics Championships will be in Providence, Rhode Island from June 8 -13 (yes, we can drive). Why so early? If the US qualifies for the 2016 Olympics, the Olympic athletes will be determined at the event! But wait we can’t talk school snow days—Howard County hasn’t even been out a week! I should have went with the vocal cord cooling thoughts of Sonic milkshakes or Wendy’s Frosty’s (both very close to the venue) or Steak ‘n Shake and Dairy Queen (very close to a lot of our hotels)! It seemed like Fairland had one of the more ‘vocal’ cheering sections . . or maybe it seemed that way to me because I sat in front of the group!
Wednesday started preliminary competition for some of our level 9, 10 and open elite athletes. In order to qualify for finals competition, athletes must place in the top 8 in preliminary competition. Scores are cumulative-carrying over from prelims to finals. In finals, athletes compete in reverse order of their finish in the preliminary round: 8th place will compete 1st and the first place finisher in preliminaries will compete last. Finals for level 9 and open elites are Friday morning, level 10 finals are Friday afternoon.
